UNWORKABLE

Raila should drop secession demand

In Summary

• Raila has threatened to lead a secession movement if Azimio's demands are not met by the government

• Azimio wants the election servers opened as well as reducing taxes and the cost of living

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has threatened to seek secession if Azimio demands are not met by the Ruto government.

Raila's demand for self-determination is both impractical and unworkable.

Raila says he will write to the United Nations but it has been a core principle of the UN since its founding in 1946 that borders must be respected, whatever their tangled history.

There are many parts of the world that would like to secede but get no traction. One nearby example is the Bakonjo of Uganda who have been fighting, off and on, since the 1960s to establish the Rwenzururu kingdom with their brethren in Congo. Similarly, the Polisario has made little progress pursuing the independence of Western Sahara.

Moreover, an independent Nyanza would be too small to be a proper state. Western Kenya is divided between Raila and Ruto and would not want to secede as a bloc.

How would an independent Nyanza, or even a larger area, organise its transport links, its international representation, its military defence, etc? This micro-state would not be viable even if all its citizens supported the idea.

Raila should drop the idea of secession and self-determination for Nyanza or a larger area.
