MASSACRE

Doomsday deaths case of police failure

In Summary
  • The mass tragedy is a monumental failure of the way government collects intelligence and the actions that it sets into motion.
  • It’s embarrassing and tragic that the big bosses in Nairobi are scrambling now to get to the scene of crime long after the fact.

Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome spent large parts of yesterday in Kilifi touring the fields in which the tragic followers of pastor Paul Mackenzie were buried after enduring slow and excruciating final moments on earth.

Today, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki is set to fly to the grave-riddled farmland converted into a mass grave by twisted doomsday cult elements.

The visits would have been extremely commendable had they happened weeks ago before the reports of deaths started filtering out of the Kilifi backwoods.

The first job of government is to protect life and property.

The extent of the massacre, which is only now beginning to emerge, is of such a scale as to not have caught the eye or ear of chiefs, nyumba kumi officers or even the police.

The mass tragedy is a monumental failure of the way government collects intelligence and the actions that it sets into motion.

It’s embarrassing and tragic that the big bosses in Nairobi are scrambling now to get to the scene of crime long after the fact.

We hope that the police will use this disaster as a wake-up call that quick action would have saved the lives of the poor desperate and vulnerable people whose ignorance was exploited by bad religion.
