The past two months have shown that the police, like the proverbial leopard, can never change its spots. Mindless killings and abductions have become a tool of savage suppression.

The police, since the British colonial era, have been a force for the rich and powerful against the poor long-suffering citizen.

President William Ruto, no doubt, wishes to be remembered for affordable housing, universal healthcare and the Hustler Fund.

But this administration must rein in the police. The images of the murdered and missing Zoomers will live long in the national consciousness.

The police must be accountable. The police must take responsibility. The political class must get beyond words and act. 

One of the big gestures towards national healing is establishing a commission or task force to probe the killings and disappearances.

In the 21st century, the police cannot behave like a set bloodthirsty mafia dons out to scare the hell out rivals in the hope of financial gain.
