The disability topic is no longer a new thing in our contemporary society.
There are millions of Kenyans living with different forms of disability.
While we may find it very hard to rethink and strategize about the position and the role of the disabled in our society, it is important to not only appreciate the existence of People With Disabilities but also look at their noble role in society.
With the new government in place, it is high time for PWDs especially the deaf, to be given the opportunity to feel free and away from stigma, by giving them equal opportunities.
Society further should avoid viewing PWDS using the lenses of pity objects and compassion, and instead adopt the superheroism lens.
They should also use appropriate words like abled-differently and avoid shaming them.
The deaf just like the other groups of disability deserves to be treated well.
The International Week of the Deaf is here with us. It is running from September 18-25.
To show solidarity with the deaf, every person should learn Kenyan sign language which is offered locally to enhance communication.
Against the said stereotypes, the deaf are just like all of us, they react when disrespected and unless you learn a language of a certain group you may never understand them.
Language is a very crucial tool that can lead to a developed and prosperous society regardless of the disability involved.
