There are murmurs about government policy on demolitions and evictions. Some say it borders on favouritism and tribalism. Previously, top state officials have publicly pledged they will not allow demolition of houses that would render families homeless. However, this is yet to be seen. Indeed, bulldozers continue to flatten houses in Athi River despite relentless pleas for mercy. The state is mum as the bulldozers roar. However, in some part of the country, a senior government official was warning police officers about attempting to evict some residents from government land. Some politicians were heard wondering why the double standards.

An opposition lawmaker was last week heard angrily asking the whereabouts of the chairman of a committee he belongs to. The legislator, who seemed not to care about who was around him, loudly lamented that the chair had disappeared with the loot they had allegedly obtained from a state officer. The officer had just appeared before the panel to provide information on a controversial action by the state. When he finally found the chair on phone, he allegedly told him that he would meet the members later in the day to share the loot. This angered the man who loudly asked why the chairman was taking too long to share the alleged proceeds yet he was reportedly given the loot in cash.
