MOURNERS are planning to turn a funeral procession today in Maua, Meru county, into a protest march.
Friends and relatives of National Intelligence Service officer Anthony Kimathi say he was killed in the line of duty and the state failed to protect him.
“We will show the world we are dissatisfied with the way the police are being treated,” Kimathi Munjuri, the chairman of the burial committee, told the Star yesterday.
Kimathi died on August 2 in disputed circumstances.
Police say he was killed by a mob in Buru Buru, Nairobi, that mistook him for a robber because he was controlling traffic while in possession of two guns.
Police say Kimathi and two friends were drunk and were heading to a bar in Ongata Rongai.
However, Munjuri said the officer’s death was “stage managed”.
“As a family we are asking ourselves: if it was mob justice, why did Kimathi not defend himself with all the training he had undergone?” he said.
Munjuri said the hearse carrying Kimathi’s body will leave Chiromo Mortuary, Nairobi, for Maua this morning.
Mourners will march for 5km from Maua to Luluma-Rwaene village in Igembe South.
Munjuri said NIS Director General Philip Kameru is expected to attend the burial.
“The director will be attending as a way of assuring the family of their commitment to unravelling the mystery,” he said.
