Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has issued a blistering statement casting doubt on the sincerity of opposition leaders set to tour the county this weekend in their bid to have her join them.

In a statement shared on her social media platforms, Mwangaza demanded answers over their past silence during the process that led to her removal from office.

In a firm address to the public, Mwangaza said the same individuals allegedly inviting her to join their political alliance were once behind what she termed as “sabotage of a democratically elected governor.”

Mwangaza was impeached by the Senate on August 2, 2024, and the High Court upheld her ouster on March 14, 2025.

Her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, subsequently assumed office.

“They have reached out to me, sent emissaries, and even called me,” Mwangaza revealed, without naming anyone.

“Before responding to their invitations, I demand the answer: was it justice to overthrow the people’s will?”

She also directed criticism at national opposition leaders expected to accompany a former governor and an ex-Cabinet Secretary during their visit to Meru.

“To the opposition leaders joining them from other regions — where was your voice when a woman leader, democratically elected, was vilified and harassed by the very people you are now in alliance with?” she posed.

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya and ex-CS Mithika Linturi are set to host former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i on Saturday, June 21.

Gachagua and Linturi visited Meru county on Friday, June 20 for a grassroots mobilisation ahead of Saturday’s political offensive.

There are also unconfirmed reports that President William Ruto will be in Meru over the weekend to attend a major dairy farmers’ conference.

The annual dairy farmers’ field day, which the President is expected to grace, will coincide with the separate opposition tour aimed at consolidating regional support.

“As a large-scale dairy farmer and union member, I will attend the farmers’ event,” Mwangaza confirmed.

The former governor urged Meru residents to remain peaceful and tolerant as political activities unfold across the county, cautioning against divisive rhetoric.

“I urge Meru residents to embrace calm, tolerance, and maturity during this visit. Let us reject divisive politics and allow every leader to present their vision without disruption,” she said.

Mwangaza concluded by reaffirming her commitment to unity, stating that Meru’s strength lies in coming together, not in “subethnic rivalry or political vendettas.”

The dual events underscore the intensifying political activity in Meru, as both government and opposition figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
