Wiper Democratic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Makueni woman representative Rose Museo, and Governor Wavinya Ndeti attend a mass service at AIC Kasina church in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on September 7, 2025.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya to take full responsibility for securing Kenya’s borders, saying the mandate lies with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and not the Interior Ministry.

Speaking at AIC Kasina church in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on Sunday, Kalonzo warned that the country’s sovereignty was under threat following reports of foreign military presence in Mandera.

“These are critical times. When it comes to the protection of sovereignty, it becomes the protection of our borders, as in our National Anthem, ‘plenty be found in our borders.’ The responsibility to guard those borders isn’t the Interior Ministry’s responsibility,” he said.

The Wiper leader was accompanied by DAP–K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Makueni Woman Representative Rose Museo, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

Kalonzo was reacting to reports that Jubaland forces from Somalia have crossed into Kenya, occupied BP1 Primary School in Mandera, and disrupted education and daily life. The situation has caused panic, displacement of families, and economic disruption in the border town.

“When you have a foreign military occupation, it’s not for the police to deal with them. Therefore, the CS concerned, that of Defence, should address this issue,” Kalonzo said.

Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif and Senator Ali Roba have already voiced alarm over the matter, warning that the alleged incursion undermines Kenya’s sovereignty.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, however, has dismissed the claims, insisting that security agencies are in control of the area.

But Kalonzo maintained that the Defence Ministry must act immediately.

“The Defence CS has kept quiet. The president is silent. Mandera residents are crying. You can’t wash it away. Please, don’t tell Kenyans that you don’t know what’s happening. They are gaining entry into the country as refugees. The military should seize those rifles,” he said.

He described it as unconstitutional and unethical for the government to allow armed men to cross into Kenya.

“I hope they have heard me. I speak with authority, experience and knowledge, and I dare anybody to contradict that. It isn’t a joke,” he added.

Kalonzo also urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, saying the country needed change.

“This country will not be the same again. The young people, ‘Gen Zs,’ shed their blood to liberate Kenya from bad leadership,” he said.

Wamalwa echoed the concern, terming the insecurity in Mandera regrettable.

“It is sad for the country to witness what is happening in Mandera. Let’s pray for our brothers and sisters under attack from Jubaland forces while the government of the day remains quiet,” he said.

Wamalwa added that opposition leaders should not be ignored when they raise national security concerns.

“Kalonzo was a Vice President of Kenya. Rigathi Gachagua was the country’s second deputy president of Kenya. They both sat in the National Security Council,” he noted.

“Matiang’i has been an Interior CS and member of the National Security Council. If we say we know what we are talking about, we know what it means to touch Mandera. Those soldiers from Jubaland should exit the country,” Wamalwa said.

Governor Ndeti, on her part, described Kalonzo as the face of the opposition following ODM leader Raila Odinga’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.

“Now that the former prime minister has joined hands with the government of the day, Kalonzo Musyoka stands as the official opposition leader, and that is democracy,” Ndeti said.

She rallied support for his 2027 presidential bid, describing him as the leader best placed to steer Kenya forward.

“Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, we are looking up to you. You will be the president of this country. To other leaders, do not use our party leader to climb up the ladder only to abandon him later,” she said.

Ndeti cautioned politicians against exploiting Kalonzo’s influence for personal gain.

“Don’t use Kalonzo as a bridge. Every politician should get to the field and work his or her way out. Misusing the party leader has come to an end because he is also fighting for the presidential seat,” she said.

Ndeti concluded: “Kalonzo is as white as cotton. People say things about him but at the end find he is a clean man.
