Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has implored politicians to uphold peace and compete on ideas rather than insults.

The Speaker warned that the conduct of certain leaders was polarising the nation at a time when unity of purpose was essential for any meaningful development.

Wetang’ula urged the Church to pray for the nation amid heightened political tensions as the contest for control of the political space intensifies.

“In the past, I have consistently said that we must uphold peace, because peace has no alternative in life. We may disagree, but we must do so respectfully; we may compete, but we must do so respectfully,” Wetang’ula said.

“Peace has no alternative; it’s the only path that guarantees stability, unity and progress for our society.”

He reiterated his commitment to securing City Status for Bungoma Town by ensuring all the necessary requirements were met.

“I will ensure Bung’oma is upgraded to a City in my lifetime,” he said.

Wetang’ula also urged Kenyans to remain steadfast in their faith and service to God as the country navigates challenging times.

He emphasised the importance of faith in leadership and nation-building.

The Mass, which drew hundreds of congregants, featured a stirring homily by Fr Mambo Collins centred on humility, faith, and servant leadership.

“Today’s liturgy reminded me that true leadership is rooted in service, guided by prayer, and anchored in values that uplift the dignity of every person,” Wetang’ula said.

He was speaking on Sunday during a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma county.

Kanduyi MP John Makali, who accompanied the Speaker, stressed the need for the Church to play a leading role in transforming society and instilling good morals among the youth.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral later held a procession to pray for various sectors within the Bungoma County Government.

These included the cereals board offices, the county assembly and executive offices, markets and business premises, and Kenya as a whole, that peace and prosperity may abound.

Wetang’ula was joined by Bungoma First Lady Margaret Makelo, Kenyan Ambassador to the UAE Ken Nganga, Bungoma county Speaker Emmanuel Situma, and a host of MCAs.
