Former President Jimmy Carter will lie in state for three days from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday, January 9, 2025.

According to Fox News, Carter’s body will be brought to the US Capitol for the stipulated period before a state funeral in Washington DC.

A letter sent to his son James Carter III by Speaker Mike Johnson and other congressional leaders requested that Carter lie in state.

"In recognition of President Carter’s long and distinguished service to the nation, we intend to ask the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate to permit his remains to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol," they wrote.

"With your approval, we will move forward with these arrangements so that the American people have the opportunity to pay their respects to President Carter before he is laid to rest."

The public will view Carter’s casket from early Wednesday through early morning Thursday.

President Joe Biden has already announced a proclamation declaring a National Day of Mourning on January 9, when the large public funeral service is scheduled in Washington.

He also ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days on federal buildings, military posts and naval stations, as well as all naval vessels.

Carter died last week on December 29, at the age of 100, just over a year after his wife Rosalynn Carter, 77, passed away.

Following his death, a motorcade brought Carter from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, through his hometown of Plains.

After leaving Plains, they brought him to the Carter Center in Atlanta, where he lay in repose from Saturday through Tuesday.

The Center was open to viewers to come and pay their respects throughout that time.

The late former president’s state funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday morning.
