In July 2024, President William Ruto dissolved his entire Cabinet sending home his allies.
This decision followed sustained weekly anti-government protests across the country by unsatisfied Gen Zs.
From the dismissed lot, only half made it back to the government.
The remaining lots were filled with allies of former Prime Minister and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
President Ruto said he was going to consult widely and form an inclusive and broad-based government.
"I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, to set up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible, implementation of radical programmes to deal with the burden of debt, raise domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, eliminate wastage and unnecessary duplication of a multiplicity of government agencies," he said when he dissolved the Cabinet.
He would later pick leaders that analysts describe as Raila’s inner circle.
Some of the lucky who made it to Ruto’s Cabinet include;
Hassan Ali Joho
He was named the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.
Before this, he served as the Governor of Mombasa and was also ODM Deputy Party leader.
Wycliffe Oparanya
He was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME Development. Before this, he was the Governor of Kakamega until 2022 and also served as ODM Deputy Party leader.
John Mbadi
Formerly a nominated MP and also ODM’s National Chairman, John Mbadi also made it to Cabinet as Treasury Cabinet Secretary. This is attributed to his financial background.
Opiyo Wandayi
Opiyo Wandayi who was at the time serving as National Assembly Minority leader and MP for Ugunja was also tapped to lead the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
Beatrice Askul
Beatrice Askul Moe who served on the ODM party’s election Board was also picked to be the Cabinet Secretary for East Africa, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), and Regional Development.
The appointments are expected to continue in the coming
weeks including in State Parastatals.
