Gor Mahia’s defensive duo, Sylvester Owino and Alphonce Omija, are bullish ahead of their maiden appearance at the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), determined to leave a lasting impression on the continental stage.
On Wednesday, Harambee Stars' head coach Benni McCarthy unveiled his final 25-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off on Saturday.
The squad is a blend of experience and youthful exuberance, with players keen to shine under the home spotlight and carry the national flag with pride. Among those handed the nod are K’Ogalo towering defenders Owino and Omija, both hungry to stamp their authority in Kenya’s CHAN debut.
"I feel great. This is an opportunity that every player has been yearning for, and I thank God for the opportunity," Owino said.
The 24-year-old has been instrumental in back-to-back FKF Premier League triumphs for Gor Mahia since joining from Kakamega Homeboyz in 2022. He caught the eye with standout performances during the 2024 COSAFA Cup in South Africa.
His efforts earned him a full senior debut against Zimbabwe last September, and he’s since won three more caps. Owino says the mood in camp is electric, with players itching to get going. "We are excited about the opportunity, and the mood in the camp is lively. The players are ready and we are more than ready to go," he added.
The Stars have been handed baptism of fire in Group A, pitted against two-time champions DR Congo and Morocco, as well as 2011 runners-up Angola and Zambia.
Kenya’s campaign begins on Sunday against DR Congo, followed by Angola on August 7, Morocco on August 10 and Zambia on August 17. Owino remains unfazed by the high-calibre opposition, particularly DR Congo, who have lifted the trophy twice. "Congo is not an easy side, considering they are two-time champions, but we are equally up to the task and ready to face them," he said.
Owino believes home support could be the catalyst for Kenya’s push for glory. "We are not under pressure; we are the home team, and having the fans cheering us on will boost our morale and uplift us."
His clubmate Omija echoed the sentiment, insisting the players are relishing the challenge. "It's a good feeling and moment for the country. We are getting ready to make the nation proud and also level up in our careers, so this tournament is a big step for us," Omija said.
While some have dubbed Group A the “group of death”, Omija brushed off any talk of intimidation. "We are confident and prepared to face any team. This is football, and there is no team bigger than the other. Anything can happen. We are ready for the huge task ahead of us," he added.
