Police shoot dead suspect who stabbed man in Mathare

Police shot and killed a suspect moments after he had stabbed a man in Mathare slums, Nairobi.

The stabbed man died of bleeding moments later, police said.

Witnesses said the suspect had chased the deceased man into a bar in the area and started stabbing him as a mob rushed to his help.

The motive of the Sunday night drama was not immediately established as both the suspect and victim died.

The assailant who police said was a notorious robber tried to escape while still armed with a knife as a mob bayed for his blood.

A mob pursued him and police joined the chase before shooting him a few meters away.

Police said he refused to heed an order to surrender.

The victim who was earlier stabbed was identified as Nicodemus Odinga and died while still at the scene.

Both bodies were taken to the City morgue awaiting autopsy and other investigations.

Elsewhere in the Kabete area, Nairobi, a woman was stabbed and killed in a fight.

The body of Mildred Muchela, 33 was found lying dead facing down with two deep cuts on the stomach.

The motive of the attack is yet to be known, police said.

No arrest has been made in connection with the murder.

The body was moved to the mortuary as the hunt for the assailant went on.

The incident happened on Saturday, May 18, police said.

In Kawangware, the body of Victor Kiyanda, 41 was found at his doorstep after unknown people had attacked him.

The motive of the attack and assailants is yet to be known. He died at the Kenyatta National Hospital where he was rushed to, police said.

And police are investigating how a suspect escaped custody in Kayole, Nairobi.

The suspect identified as Sammy Wangila was facing obtaining by false pretense charges when he escaped on Thursday, May 16, police said.

He was being held at the station pending court sessions when the incident happened.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said the accused was erroneously released the previous day as police were returning suspects into custody.

He was mixed with other suspects and erroneously released.

"We are investigating the incident," he said.

A hunt for the suspect is ongoing even as investigations go on.
