Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Saturday paid a visit to his 87 year-old ailing neighbour.

Gachagua who is currently in his hometown, Nyeri said he was taking his early morning walk in the village when he was notified of Agnes Kabubu's health condition, also known as Mama Nyaguthi, by Community Health Promoters he met on the way.

After hearing about her well-being, Gachagua decided to change course and visit her at her house.

"In my early morning walk today in Hombe Forest near my rural home in Hiriga village Mathira, I bumped into two Community Health Promoters who were already up by 6am and were on the road making visits to homes in the village," DP Gachagua said.

"They brought to my attention the health challenges of my neighbour, Agnes Wangu Kabubu (Mama Nyaguthi), who they had earlier visited and established she was unwell," he said.

The Deputy President described the visit to Mama Nyaguthi's house as nostalgic, as she was a close friend of his late mother, Martha Kirigo.

Gachagua described her as a woman of unequaled kindness saying he holds her in high esteem.

He has since made arrangements for her to be taken to Nairobi to receive specialised medical attention.

Gachagua recalled how Mama Nyaguthi supported him during his mother's lengthy hospitalization, ensuring he was well looked after.

"Mama Nyaguthi came to our home, prepared food for us, and made sure I did not fail to attend school for all the months my mother was in hospital," Gachagua said.

DP Gachagua acknowledged the critical role that CHPs are playing in the healthcare system in the country.

He noted that they have been at the forefront of ensuring early detection of diseases, especially in the Mt Kenya region affected by a high burden of lifestyle diseases including hypertension and diabetes.

He said the CHP Programme being rolled out in collaboration with counties, has assisted immensely in early detection and prevention of lifestyle diseases.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensure that the programme is implemented as planned.
