Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has said the affordable housing will play a significant role once approved.

President William Ruto is on Tuesday expected to sign the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023 into law.

"Once approved, it will be a significant achievement for our country in terms of housing, job creation, and embracing our African customs in a modern context," Mungatana said during an interview with KTN News.

"A long time ago as a young man, you were not supposed to stay in your father’s house. You were to build your own ‘Simba’ at a certain age. You must migrate from the family house. So, this is allowing people, boda-boda riders, and those doing manual jobs to actualise our African customs but in a modern way."

He said that the African customs will be enhanced modernly because the houses will have sanitation, electricity, and everything else, unlike when they were made of mad and roofs were leaking.

He added that the government has taken the right track.

“There is nothing good that comes without sacrifice. Our country was in a terrible position, we made the correct investments. Fertiliser, petrol and food prices have gone down. We have taken the right track and I believe our country is in the right direction,” he said.

His remarks came after President William Ruto’s statement on March 16, that he will be signing the Affordable Housing Bill.

This was after the Parliament on Thursday passed the legislation that will anchor the affordable housing programme.

"I will sign the bill because we are in agreement with the court on issues on housing. We want to make sure that we do that which is going to change our country," President Ruto.

The President highlighted that the affordable housing project will not only provide employment opportunities for young people in the country but also ensure there is sufficient land available for agriculture and food production.

"Housing is going to give us jobs for our young people, give us decent living conditions for our people, is going to assist us in making sure that we have land for food production and is also going to make sure that we grow our manufacturing sector," the President said.
