Lands and Housing CS Alice Wahome has said over 100,000 affordable housing units are under construction in various parts of the country.

During the launch of the Ministry's Strategic Plan for 2023-2027 on Monday, CS  Wahome said that the affordable housing project is meant to help curb housing deficiency.

"The development will bridge the 2 million housing deficit for the growing population in urban areas," Wahome said.

"The aim is to create affordable housing for low and middle-income citizens while creating job opportunities for over 1 million Kenyans."

He was accompanied by three Principal Secretaries from  Lands and Physical Planning Generali Nixon Korir, Public Works  Joel Arumonyang and Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga Mwaura.

The Strategic Plan will guide the Ministry's implementation of activities, projects and programmes for the next five years.

CS Wahome said the Strategic Plan will not only promote job and wealth creation through affordable housing but also ensure security land tenure, enhanced revenue collection, and sector value chains promoting the country's national Gross Domestic Product(GDP) for improved livelihoods.

She assured that in a bid to ensure citizens are protected from land fraud, the ministry will issue title deeds.

"The Ministry of Lands aims to issue title deeds to all properties by 2027."

One of the agencies key in the Housing plan is the National Housing Corporation which is part of the housing and construction that aims to build 110,000 units through direct construction and strategic partnership.

The country supplies 50,000 housing units annually to the market while the demand is 200,000 units.

To bridge the gap and cater for the increased population, it is estimated that over 200,000 additional housing units are required annually to satisfy the unmet need for decent and affordable housing.

As of 2022, Kenya needed to build 250,000 units annually for at least four years to plug its cumulative housing deficit of two million units, according to the World Bank.

President  William Ruto launched 51,666 units in five months, from September 2023 to January 2024, a status report seen by the Star shows, creating at least 168,431 jobs in various regions of the country.
