Athletes can now heave with relief after the government and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) agreed to end double taxation on prize money.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba said the ministry entered a deal to see all local athletes who win in international competitions not double-taxed.

Namwamba disclosed this development on Tuesday during the unveiling of the management committee for Team Kenya to the Paris Olympic Games at Talanta Plaza.

This, he said, will shield Kenya’s top brand ambassadors and ensure excessive taxes do not eat into their hard-earned winnings.

“My Ministry strives to uphold principles of fairness and equity, recognising the dedication and sacrifices by athletes,” the CS explained.

This aligns with the Ministry’s Talanta Hela goal of nurturing talent.

“This underscores the government’s commitment to realise the Talanta Hela vision of not only celebrating talents but also nurturing them into tangible monetary value toward empowering athletes to maximise their potential and contribute to Kenya’s sporting legacy,” he said.

The CS emphasised the importance of inclusivity, transparency and openness in every investment made for the Paris Olympics project.

Highlighting the importance of showcasing Kenya’s heritage and promoting the country, Namwamba stressed the need for a kit that reflects Kenya’s diverse culture while staying trendy.

"The Games is about showcasing the finest aspects of Kenya's heritage as we promote and market our country. Therefore, it's important to create a kit embodying Kenya's diverse heritage while being fashion-forward," the CS added.

Team Kenya will wear a ceremonial kit designed by Kenyans.

National Olympics Committee of Kenya Secretary General Francis Mutuku, said: “We have created a pathway towards creating the best kit. We are open to public consultation and engagement throughout the process.”
