Police on Tuesday recovered 531Kgs of bhang worth Sh15 million in a homestead in Migori county.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement said one person was arrested during the operation and was being held by the police.

The woman was arrested in the homestead in a joint operation by a team of DCI detectives backed up by their K9 Isebania Border Post counterparts.

According to the DCI report, detectives used sniffer dogs to help trace where the bhang.

During the operation, a man who was at the scene managed to escape and the police intensified their search for him.

"In the stealth operation, nine sacks of Cannabis sativa sticks and another eight containing the unrefined drug were found at various concealed spots with the help of a sniffer dog," the DCI said.

"An unidentified male suspect was in time to make good his escape from the scene, leaving behind the woman and the prohibited hard drug worth over Sh15 million in street estimates."

Police have in the recent past intensified their war on drugs and illicit alcohol in a joint operation with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada).

Just last week, at least two traffickers were arrested and 435 rolls of bhang were recovered from them in an operation in Mtwapa, Kilifi County.

The dealers were ferrying the narcotics when they were stopped on Saturday, February 10, 2024, police said.

Police said the bhang originated from Migori County.

Nacada CEO Dr Anthony Omerikwa confirmed that the consumption of bhang had risen by 90 per cent in the Coast region.

He explained that about a million Kenyans smoke bhang.

The previous week, security teams intercepted more than 400 kilograms of bhang valued at Sh20 million along the Mwingi-Garissa highway.

Two suspects who were ferrying the drugs in a lorry carrying cows to Nairobi were arrested in the Thursday afternoon operation.

Police said the cargo was hidden in a false compartment in the lorry.
