Police and Kenya Wildlife Service officials are investigating an incident in which a 40-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant in Samburu County.

The body of Mwenda alias Kiongozi was found by residents in Lolkunono village on Sunday long after he had been killed, police said.

Police said he was attacked and killed by an elephant on his way home on February 3, night.

The officers from Maralal police station and KWS officers from Maralal visited the scene and found the body, which had multiple injuries on the head and stomach lying on the roadside.

The body was moved to the Samburu County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem exercise.

KWS has mounted a campaign to address the menace, which includes fencing the areas.

The government and conservation groups have a compensation program for people and herders whose livestock are killed by wild animals.

Officials said the loss of habitat and climate change threatened the number of wild animals the wild and that their future looked "bleak".

The officials say policies aimed at enabling communities to co-exist with wildlife were vital.
