Kenya Railways has warned the public against fraudsters posing as its agents and purporting to sell SGR passenger tickets.

In a statement released on Thursday, the organization alerted that these fraudsters are claiming to sell the tickets at inflated prices, higher than Kenya Railways' official ticket prices.

It has warned Kenyans from falling prey to fraudsters, maintaining that tickets for travel on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service can only be purchased either online using the KRC tickets platform, by phone using the *639# USSD payment solution, or in person through over the counter purchase at the nearest station.

“All tickets for travel on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service trains are collected at the nearest Madaraka Express Passenger Service station,” KR said in the statement.

“You will print at the automatic ticket printing machines or it will be issued at the counter by a uniformed Passenger Service Assistant. Never accept a ticket from a stranger,” it warned.

The management also emphasized that tickets for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service are issued in the name of a specific passenger and, therefore, cannot be transferred from one person to another.

They further clarified that only the individual whose details are on the ticket is permitted to use it.

It's important that the names on the identification documents match exactly with the names on the ticket.

“We have not appointed any person of the firm to sell tickets on our behalf. Do not keep in contact with any individual seeking to sell you tickets using other means other than the above-stated means,” KR warned.

This comes even as the KR new fare rates are expected to take effect from January 1, 2024.
