The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has urged all motorists, road users, and Kenyans in general to shun any form of traffic corruption.

The Commission urged Kenyans to embrace the culture of compliance with traffic laws and regulations, as a way of enhancing road safety.

"Kenyans should know that corruption in traffic management can yield disastrous consequences including loss of lives or permanent disabilities through accidents arising from the operation of unroadworthy vehicles, carrying excess passengers, and other violations," EACC  spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said.

Ngumbi on Sunday said there is a need for caution on the roads particularly during the December holidays when most Kenyans will be traveling.

"The Commission has noted that the failure of motorists, especially those operating Public Service Vehicles (PSV) to comply with traffic laws increases levels of corruption on Kenyan roads as the motorists seek to bribe their way out of law enforcement actions," he said.

Ngumbi said the problem of traffic corruption is not entirely initiated by the police officers who extort money from the drivers and other road users.

He said motorists are part of it.

In this regard, Ngumbi said Kenyans should adopt a culture of intolerance to traffic corruption as a way of enhancing road safety

He said EACC has enhanced surveillance on the roads and will be taking action against any person offering, giving, soliciting or receiving bribes to compromise traffic law enforcement.

"Suspected corruption may be reported to EACC through Toll-Free No.1551," he said.

His remarks come after 10 people died in a grisly road accident in Makueni as seven others sustained injuries.

The incident occurred in the Kwa Mbisu area in the Mbooni sub-county on Saturday, leaving seven other people dead.

Mbooni West deputy county commissioner Stanislaus Apwoka said scores of those who sustained injuries during the incident were rushed to Mbooni sub-county hospital for medical attention.

He said the 14-seater matatu had 17 passengers.

The driver of a 14-seater matatu that was headed to Machakos from Kikima is said to have lost control before landing in a ditch after it rolled several times.
