Five more people drown in separate incidents as El Nino strikes

At least five more people drowned in separate incidents in parts of the country which has been linked to ongoing El Nino rains.

This increases to more than 60 the number of people so far killed separately in rain-related incidents, officials said.

The incidents were reported in Thika, Sultan Hamud, Emali, Kibwezi and Kathiani.

Officials warned of more deaths following ongoing heavy rains being experienced in parts of the country.

Thika incident

In Thika’s Makongeni area, the body of 38-year-old Paul Muinde was retrieved from River Chania, police said.

The man had been reported missing for two days. The body was moved to the mortuary.

Sultan Hamud incident

In Sultan Hamud, Makueni County the body of 75-year-old Daniel Mwina who had been reported missing in Kisaulo village was found floating in a water pond.

The body had been swept to the water pond by flash floods, police said.

Emali incident

The body of Simon Kisiu, 72, was retrieved from Muuoi River, Emali after drowning.

The man was swept to the banks of the river after heavy rains.

Kibwezi incident

In Kibwezi, the body of an unknown man was found in River Athi. The man had been swept to the area where the body was found.

Police said his lower torso was missing.

Kathiani incident

And in Kathiani, a one-year-old girl drowned in a compost pit that was full of rainwater.

The child was playing with her friends when the incident happened on Wednesday, the family and police said.

Most parts of the country are experiencing heavy rains. The weathermen have warned the rains will persist in the next months and urged general caution.

Many other people have been displaced in the incidents and are camping at various places seeking help, interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has revealed.

Kindiki on Monday urged Kenyans to heed the advice of the government and move to safer areas as the rains persist.

“I want to appeal to Kenyans not to take chances when it comes to flood waters. Take great caution.

“When our officers tell you to evacuate from flood areas, please comply, and if you don’t, we will force you so that we can save lives,” Kindiki said.

The Kenya Red Cross, which is leading in rescue missions has already asked those in flood-prone areas in Western, South Rift and Lake Basin regions to be alert and move to higher zones.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Idris Ahmed said the rains, depending on the area, have different effects at different times.

"If you look at the weather forecast in the next two weeks, we shall have more concern in Western Kenya, lake basin, South Rift region," he said.

The official said counties in the northern region including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo were among the worst hit.
