This is yet another success story in a chain of recent achievements by the hospital under the management of chief executive Dr Wilson Aruasa.
The hospital, in collaboration with Moi University and Peruvian Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas, carried out the life-saving surgeries within the last one week.
In medical terms, such operations are known as HCC resection surgeries.
The two highly specialised surgeries were done by a team of the hospital medical experts at MTRH Majaliwa Theatre.
"We are proud of the team the medical team involved and as a hospital we continue to focus of providing quality healthcare for Kenyans and all our clients," Dr Aruasa said.
Such surgeries were previously done outside the country. One of the beneficiaries was a 30yr-old-man with liver cancer from Busia county who had a 16x8cm sized tumour with a life expectancy of about three months if not removed.
The patient has since been discharged from the intensive care unit after successful tumour resection and is progressing well.
Dr Aruasa said liver cancers account for the second largest number of cancer mortalities in the world with approximately 782,000 new cases annually.
The team also conducted a surgery on a 43-year-old woman from Uasin Gishu county with two giant vascular tumours of the liver using an innovative cost-saving technique.
The technique involves a combination of diathermy and normal saline (cost less than Sh147) as a substitute for Tissue link (average cost Sh73,525). The patient has already been discharged and is recuperating well.
Dr Aruasa said the collaboration between the three institutions aims at enhancing the capacity for the surgical treatment of HCCs and liver-related ailments.
“With time, it is hoped MTRH would be able to comfortably provide liver transplant surgical services," the CEO said.
INEN is fully supported by French government.
Dr Aruasa said the hospital had greatly benefitted from extensive support from the government of President William Ruto and development partners.
"We commit to fully support and contribute to President Ruto's vision to ensure Kenyans have access to quality and affordable healthcare," he said.
The surgical team that carried out the surgeries included Dr.Eloy Ruiz (surgical oncologist, INEN), Dr Andrew Wandera (surgical gastroenterologist, MU/MTRH), Dr Aida Kenseko (general surgeon, MTRH).
Others were Dr Andrew Wainaina(general surgery resident, MU), Dr Elena Onofre (consultant anaesthesiologist, INEN), Dr Obadiah Samoei (consultant anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Dr Josephat Kerama (consultant anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Jessica Alarcon (theatre nurse, INEN), Mariah Tininah, Hadia Anoo Margaret and Everlyne Torori (theatre nurses, MTRH).
Dr Aruasa said the hospital was always keen to train local medical experts who are now able to handle such complex medical needs affecting Kenyans.
