The National Heroes Council has invited Kenyans to submit names of persons for recognition as heroes during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

In a notice, the public has until August 29 to forward the names of the nominees.

“Pursuant to provisions of Sections 22 of the Act, the public is hereby notified that the council is calling for submissions of proposals for the nomination of suitable persons to be recommended for declaration as heroes and heroines,” reads the notice.

Council’s chairman Adan Wachu said the proposals will be evaluated as per the Kenya Heroes Act.

This year’s celebration will be held in Kericho with President William Ruto set to confer the recommended persons with various state honours.

Individuals declared as heroes are entitled to some benefits which include an invite as a state guest to national and community functions.

A hero is someone who is admired for his achievements and his noble qualities.

The Council was established in 2014 through the Kenya Heroes Act to help formulate, implement, identify and also recommend policies relating to national heroes.

President Ruto holds the position of Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH) which is the highest in the country while Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) is the second highest.

During the last Jamhuri Day celebration, 460 persons including former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati were honored.

He was awarded the Order of the Golden Heart among several governors.
