The Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms has recommended that the Education Management Information System(EMIS) be renamed

In a report on Tuesday, the working party wants EMIS renamed to Kenya Education Management Information System.

"Delete the word 'EMIS' as currently used in the Act and substitute with the word 'KEMIS'," the report reads.

The working party also noted that Basic Education refers to the Education Management Information System (EMIS) and not NEMIS as it is currently known.

The team recommended that EMIS be replaced with KEMIS to reflect the country Kenya.

The working party also wants KEMIS to capture all learners in basic education institutions and where a learner is not registrable due to reasons which may include; lack of national identity card or being above 18 years, the county director of education shall handle each case on its merit and where the reasons given are merited register the learner on KEMIS

Additionally, the group recommended that general penalties for the falsification of data be provided in the regulations.

It is noted that those above 18 years are not admissible in the system, adding that there have been instances of falsification of information.

EMIS is a system for the collection, integration, processing, maintenance and dissemination of data for an education system.

It is also a system where information is uploaded to support decision-making, policy analysis and formulation, planning, monitoring and management at all levels of an education system.

The system includes people, technology, models, processes, procedures, rules and regulations that function together in the education space.

EMIS provides education leaders and decision-makers in the education space with comprehensive, reliable and unambiguous and timely data.

It offers education leaders that can thus easily monitor what is going on in their schools.
