Cheptil, Iten and Mwiruti turn focus to Rift Valley regional titles

Volleyball giants Cheptil High School are out to defend their four titles this, coach Mathias Kosgei has said.

Cheptil defended their Nandi county title over the weekend at Kaptumo High School and Kosgey said this is a good start as they seek to defend the regional, national, East Africa and African titles.

This will start with the Rift Valley Secondary Schools Sports Association regional championships set for Laikipia in a fortnight.

After beating Lemokwo 3-2 over the weekend, Kosgey said.

"Victory today means a lot to us. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We need to work hard to defend our Rift Valley title in two weeks' time," said Kosgey.

Captain Jude Kiptanui is also bubbling with confidence, especially after overcoming a stubborn Lemokwo side.

“The game was not easy but in volleyball, it is all about believing in yourself and talking as a team. We had good formation ahead of the final. We have a big task of defending all our titles,” said Kiptanui.

In boys’ football, Chemase defeated Koitabut 2-1 in the final while former champions Itigo Girls thrashed Koitabut 7-0 to advance.

In Elgeyo Marakwet county, St Patrick’s Iten thrashed newcomers 24-0 with Benedict Oyare netting a hattrick in the boys' rugby Sevens final.

Oyare touched down first for the Saints with Mathangui Wachira adding the extras to give the champions a 7-0 lead. Soon after, Oyare completed his brace with Maxwell Shigali converting for a 14-0 lead.

After the break, Oyare was at it again for his hattrick with Shigali failing to add the extras for a 19-0 lead. Rob Taboi touched down for St Patrick's in the dying minutes with Wachira unable to convert for a 24-0 domination.

“We missed a chance to qualify for the East Africa championships in rugby 15s but the time has come for us to shine in Sevens," said Indasi.

"We had an easy win against Lelboinet. The boys were ready for any team in the final and they delivered handsomely."

In the semifinals Saints were 19-07 winners against Tambach while Lelboinet beat Simotwo 7-5.

Mwiruti Boys will represent Uasin Gishu county in the boys' football tournament at the regional level following their 4-0 win over neighbours Wareng High at Kapsoya High School.

The final match was earlier set for Saturday at Hill School but was pushed to Sunday and shifted to Kapsoya, behind closed doors, after crowd trouble rocked the initial venue.

Sammy Losire scored a hattrick in the ninth, 17th and 19th minutes for Fredrick Owino's side. Brian Shatea sealed victory in the 78th minute.
