National Assembly's Public Petition Committee has embarked on a fact-finding mission to establish if residents of Narok East constituency are “landlocked.”
The residents have petitioned the House to intervene saying they don’t have direct access roads to Naivasha being surrounded by Hell’s Gate National Park, Gorge Park, and Oserian flower farm.
Narok East MP Aramat Lemanken presented the petition to the House on behalf of the residents of Inkoirienito, Olmara, Narasha, Oltepesi and Suswa.
Public Petition Committee led by its chair Nimrod Mbai will on Friday visit the area on a fact-finding mission.
The residents claim they are only allowed to pass through Hell’ Gate-owned by Kenya Wildlife Service on Monday and Thursday, which disrupts health facilities and government services.
They said those wishing to use the road must pay the management of Hell’s Gate access fees or obtain prior permission to do so.
“The residents of Inkoirienito, Olmara, Narasha, Oltepesi, and Suswa are socially and economically landlocked due to the fact that the only available access road is limited by farms and other structures like the Kedong’ Farm, Gorge Park, Hell’s Gate and Oserian Farm,” the petition reads.
It added that for a long time, the communities have lacked direct road access to potential markets, health facilities, and other essential government services.
“Residents have been forced to take longer routes to access health services,” the petition adds.
“In the event of a medical emergency, patients must wait at the Olkaria and Narasha gates to be granted permission and on numerous occasions, lives have been lost and mothers have given birth while waiting to be granted access.”
The residents said efforts to resolve the matter with relevant authorities have been futile.
They now want the House to intervene and facilitate having an access road to direct link affected areas and Moi South Lake Road in Naivasha.
