A section of Evangelical Church leaders have opposed plans to regulate churches following formation of a taskforce by President William Ruto.

Chairperson of the Kenya Coalition of Churches Alliance and Ministries Stephen Mutua said they are in disagreement with the State's decision to regulate churches over the Shakahola massacre.

"The Pastor Paul Mackenzie-led church has never been part of us, an umbrella body. The taskforce is already going around the country and we are urging our members to be very careful during the exercise," he said

Mutua added that the body is working on modalities to self regulate and are ready to present their documents for scrutiny.

"Be wary of people who are spreading fake gospel, we have documents to present to the task force in regards to our self moderation," he stated.

President William Ruto in May appointed a judicial commission to regulate  religious institutions' laws.

Members of the 14-member commission took oath of office at a ceremony presided over by High Court Principal Judge Eric Ogola.

The taskforce has been mandated to identify gaps in the legal, institutional and governance systems that have allowed cults and extremist groups to operate and make recommendations on how the public can report such cases.

The team will also come up with recommendations on standards and minimum certification requirements for all religious organisations and their leaders on how to be registered before being allowed to operate.

Bishop Mark Kariuki, Bishop (Dr) Eli Rop, Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, Judy Thongori, Rev (Dr) Alphonse Kanga, Bishop Philip Kitoto and Dr Faridun Abdalla are members of the commission.

They will be joined by Prof Musili Wambua, Joseph Khalende Wabwire, Mary Awuor Kitegi, Charles Kanjama, Leah Kasera, Nancy Murega and Wilson Wanyanga.
