Thirty three suspects arrested Wednesday for illegally invading James Finlay tea farm in Bomet will today be arraigned before a Bomet court.

Bomet police commander Mathews Mangira said they will face charges of stealing, arson and assault.

The suspects are part of the 46 who were nabbed in an operation by security officers at Kolongei and Kapkilaibei in Konoin.

Mangira said the 13 others who were released were found to be university students, teachers and security guards at the farm.

“We had to release them after establishing they were not in any way connected to the incident...but, we have some names of individuals suspected to be behind it whom we are still pursuing,” Mangira told the Star.

During the May 14 incident where more than 200 youths invaded the farm and illegally harvested tea, six police officers who had responded to the call were injured.

During the confrontation, one man is said to have drowned and a police vehicle torched.

The police boss at the same time said they have increased mobilisation at the farm even as he warned residents against attacking security officers and invading private into private property.

"We want to condemn this act, we cannot tolerate it. The public should know that it is an offence to attack police or damage private property,” he said," he said.

"Police are humans just like anyone else and they are there to protect them and their property."

The commander lauded the members of the public who he noted have started cooperating by providing crucial information assuring them of protection and that it shall not be leaked.
