Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure is on Wednesday expected to return to Kerio valley in the North Rift amidst the rising cases of banditry.

Kindiki seeks to find lasting solutions to uncontrolled cases of cattle rustling and bandit attacks which have left hundreds dead in the past years with the latest being the killing of two family members.

The attacks have also seen thousands of cattle stolen by armed bandits in the area.

It will be his second visit after a similar one early last month which came after a spate of killings.

Speaking during a meeting that was also attended by leaders who included Roads CS Kipchumba Murkomen, he regretted that the insecurity menace in the region had undermined development.

“It is unacceptable that so-called bandits kill innocent young children. Let the blood of the two girls be the last as we move to ensure our people live in peace,” he said.

Early this year, Elgeyo Marakwet also acquired a drone to help boost security in the area.

The gadget, according to Governor Wesly Rotich can go in a radius of 10 kilometres and can operate at night and in cloudy conditions.

"We are now resorting to technology to address this insecurity challenge. The drone will help our security officers locate the bandits and monitor their movements. We have tested it and it is functional," he said.

So far, the government has deployed more police reservists to the areas.

On Monday, CS Kindiki announced the creation of a special squad to monitor and pursue bandits.

“The government is investing in community-based intelligence, drone surveillance technology, modern personal protection equipment and kitting for our security personnel and application of land and air assets to neuter bandits and rustlers,” he said.

In January alone, the bandits are said to have killed 15 in the area.
