Mwingi man hacks son to death for failing to fetch water

A middle-aged man from Kyome/Thaana ward, Mwingi West, in Kitui was arrested after he allegedly hacked his son to death.

Mwendwa Mboo is said to have used an axe on his 14-year-old son, Mumo Mwendwa, after he found him playing with his mates when he had been sent to fetch water at the river.

Esther Mwendwa, his wife who works in Kibwezi, said she was not at home when the incident occurred and was informed by relatives about the passing on of her son.

"His father had sent him to fetch water, instead Mumo went to play with friends," she said.

The son ran away when he saw his father who according to his wife said has been violent following his drug abuse history.

"He hacked him to death using an axe and knives," she said.

Esther also said the husband had beaten and badly injured their son in the head last month.

She said the body is lying at the Migwani hospital mortuary.

"My son died a very painful death and I plead with the government to intervene and ensure justice is served," she said.

Florence Muli, the deceased cousin said the incident happened at around 11:00 pm on Sunday night.

Benard Mwangangi, Mboo's elder brother said on the same night, he heard so much noise from his brother's house and initially assumed it.

He said his brother has been so hostile that most people even feared visiting his home.

"After hearing him yell, I immediately heard his son screaming for help," he said

When Mwangangi went to the house, he found the 14-year-old lying in a pool of blood and Mboo tied with ropes by members of the public awaiting arrest.

Confirming the incident, the area chief Grace Mwikali Muli said the man is currently held pending more investigations.
