
Football betting remains widely popular across sub-Saharan Africa, with a majority of adults in key markets actively participating, according to a GeoPoll report on betting in Africa released on July 16, 2026.
The survey, which sampled adult populations across six African nations, places Kenya at the top of the list, where 64 per cent of respondents report placing wagers on football matches.
Ghana follows closely behind, with 60 per cent of adults engaging in the activity.
East African neighbour Tanzania recorded a 59 per cent participation rate, slightly ahead of South Africa at 58 per cent.
Meanwhile, 57 per cent of surveyed adults in Uganda participate in football betting.
Nigeria recorded the lowest proportion among the six surveyed countries, though a clear majority of 54 per cent still bet on the sport.
Overall, the findings highlight a consistently high level of engagement with football wagering throughout the region.
