

A new GeoPoll survey reveals how football fans across seven African nations pledged their loyalties during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The data highlights a strong trend of domestic patriotism alongside widespread regional backing for Senegal across the continent.
Home country support peaked dramatically in North and West Africa. In Egypt, an overwhelming 92% of respondents backed their national team, marking the highest level of domestic solidarity in the survey.
Ghana followed closely, with 89% of fans rallying behind the Black Stars. South Africa also enjoyed robust home support, with 72% of local respondents backing Bafana Bafana.
Beyond domestic borders, Senegal emerged as a major continental favorite, capturing significant support from multiple nations.
In South Africa, 63% of respondents threw their weight behind the West African side. Senegal also secured majority support in East Africa, backed by 58% of respondents in Kenya and 51% in Uganda.
In Nigeria, 41% of those surveyed chose to back Senegal.
The survey coincides with a dramatic tournament cycle for several African contenders.
Ghana's Black Stars saw their campaign end in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia. Similarly, South Africa suffered elimination in the Round of 32 on June 28 after a 1-0 loss to Canada.
