As June marks Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, identifying psychological distress and understanding how to support male well-being have become critical points of public health discussion.

Medical experts note that men frequently exhibit specific signs when experiencing mental health struggles.

These signs of distress include noticeable irritability, anger, or aggression, alongside prominent changes in mood, energy levels, sleep patterns, or appetite.

Affected individuals may also experience difficulty concentrating, express feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emotional numbness, and engage in risky behaviour or substance misuse.

More severe indicators involve a withdrawal from family, friends, and daily activities, as well as thoughts of death or suicide.

Addressing these challenges requires a proactive network of support. Initial measures focus on encouraging open communication with family and friends during stressful periods, promoting early intervention from health professionals, and supporting ongoing treatment to prevent relapse.

Well-being can be further sustained by encouraging healthy coping habits like adequate sleep and exercise, supporting therapy for past trauma, and vigilantly watching for shifts in mood or behaviour.

Additionally, loved ones are advised to check in regularly—especially following difficult life events—and offer to accompany men to their medical appointments.

In critical situations involving acute suicide risk, the directive is clear: stay with the individual immediately and seek emergency medical assistance.
