Health authorities are investigating a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship after several passengers developed flu-like symptoms during the voyage.
The MV Hondius vessel, which departed from Argentina on 1 April, has an outbreak of hantavirus on board.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease transmitted mainly through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine or saliva.
It does not typically spread from person to person, which limits the risk of a large-scale outbreak in confined settings like ships.
Affected passengers reported fever, fatigue, muscle aches and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties consistent with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
Cruise operators have since intensified sanitation measures, isolated suspected cases and notified health agencies for further testing and contact tracing.
Experts believe the exposure may have occurred through contaminated food storage areas or hidden rodent activity onboard.
While the overall risk remains low, authorities are urging vigilance, early medical attention for symptoms, and strict hygiene practices as investigations continue to determine the exact source and extent of exposure.
