In 2025, Kenya’s State Department for the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and partners stepped up relief efforts as drought left millions vulnerable.

According to national reports, cash transfers and food distributions reached tens of thousands of households across counties like Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Garissa and Tana River, with about 132,780 families receiving support worth Sh870 million through the Hunger Safety Net Programme to buy food and essential non-food items.

These interventions aimed to stabilise food access and protect basic livelihoods amid prolonged dry conditions in ASAL regions.
