What to know about cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is a disease that develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, and is mainly caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, observed to promote prevention, screening, and early detection.

Cervical is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers if detected early. Regular screening through Pap smears or HPV testing can identify precancerous changes before they become cancer.

Vaccination against HPV significantly reduces the risk, especially when given before exposure to the virus.

Early symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or pain during intercourse, but early stages often show no symptoms
