While some counties continue to report high HIV infections, others recorded remarkably low numbers in 2024.
Wajir had the lowest number of new cases at 32, followed closely by Lamu (36) and Tana River (37). Isiolo and Marsabit reported 39 and 40 new infections, respectively, while Nyandarua, Mandera, Garissa, Tharaka Nithi, and West Pokot recorded between 58 and 86 new cases.
These figures indicate significant regional disparities in HIV transmission across the country. Lower infection rates in these counties may be attributed to smaller populations, less urbanisation, and effective local HIV prevention initiatives.
However, public health authorities caution against complacency, emphasising that even low numbers can quickly increase if preventive measures are neglected.
The National Syndemic Disease Control Council (NSDCC) highlights the importance of continued surveillance, education, and access to testing and treatment services, even in counties with low prevalence.
Community-based programs that promote safe practices, coupled with government support for health infrastructure, remain essential to sustain these low infection rates.
Maintaining vigilance and proactive interventions in low-burden areas is critical to achieving the national goal of reducing HIV incidence and ultimately controlling the epidemic across Kenya.
