In 2024, Kenya witnessed a concerning rise in new HIV infections, with the total number increasing by 19% from 16,752 cases in 2023 to 19,991.
The top ten counties accounted for a significant portion of these cases, representing 60% of all new infections.
Nairobi led the list with 3,045 new cases, reflecting the city’s dense population and high mobility, which contribute to increased vulnerability to HIV transmission.
Migori followed with 1,572 new infections, while Kisumu reported 1,341, highlighting the continued burden of HIV in western Kenya.
Homa Bay, Busia, and Siaya recorded 1,180, 886, and 873 new cases, respectively, indicating persistent challenges in HIV prevention and control in these counties.
Kakamega, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Bungoma also featured among the top ten, with new infections ranging from 679 to 835.
Public health experts emphasise the importance of targeted interventions in high-burden areas, alongside continued monitoring and resource allocation, to reduce the incidence of HIV and mitigate its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
