Gigantomastia is a rare medical condition characterised by excessive, non-cancerous breast growth. Defined as having more than 5 pounds (about 2.3 kg) of excess tissue, it affects both sexes but is more common in females.
Globally, only around 300 cases have been reported. The condition can occur spontaneously or be triggered by hormonal changes, and it may involve one or both breasts. Its exact cause is unclear but may relate to hormonal sensitivity and, in some cases, associated diseases like arthritis.
Diagnosis is primarily clinical.
Notably, on October 22, KNH removed 20.86 kg of breast tissue in the world’s largest gigantomastia surgery.
