Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 and is to be laid to rest on October 19th in Bondo, was known by many names, each capturing a facet of his complex political life.
The most intimate was Baba, meaning "Father," an enduring term of endearment that portrayed him as a steadfast patriarch in Kenya's democratic struggle.
His official authority was reflected in Jakom, the Luo word for "Chairman," referring to his long-standing role as the leader of the ODM party. Yet, his political unpredictability and masterful strategy earned him the title Agwambo, the "mysterious one."
His raw political might and ability to withstand political storms were symbolised by Tinga, the "tractor," representing his resilience and strength.
A more formal tribute was paid with Baba wa Taifa, or "Father of the Nation," honouring his profound contribution to the nation's democratic history. For his followers, he was also Joshua, a biblical reference to a liberator leading them to reform and prosperity.
Finally, after the disputed 2017 elections, he embraced the defiant title of People's President, a mandate drawn directly from the will of his supporters. These seven names collectively illustrate the decades-long narrative of sacrifice, strategy, and popular support that defined his life.
