Tributes continue pouring in as state agencies struggle to contain an overwhelming crowd that has made it nearly impossible to view the body of Raila Odinga.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has become the latest to send his condolences, saying Africa has lost one of its biggest pro-democracy icons.

“I am saddened by the news of the passing of H.E. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and a distinguished African statesman whose life symbolised resilience, courage, and democratic struggle in Africa,” Goodluck said.

The ex-Nigerian leader said Kenya has lost a patriot and African continent has lost a great leader, one that understood that leadership is not about self, but about service; who believed and looked forward to Africa's greatness and ascendancy.

“I honour him not just as a brother in the cause of democracy, but as a committed pan-Africanist whose light will continue to shine. May history remember him kindly, and may Africa continue to be blessed by his hope, wisdom and sacrifice,” he said.

At the same time, the Public Service Commission (PSC) has sent a message of condolence to the family of Raila Odinga, who passed on yesterday in India.

“PSC joins the nation in mourning the loss of Rt. Hon. RILA Amolo Odinga is a visionary leader, a patriot, and a steadfast champion of democracy, justice and unity.

“His courage, sacrifice, and dedication to a better Kenya over generations and shaped the nation’s democratic journey. His belief in accountable governance and people-centred development remains a guiding light for all,” PSC Vice Chairperson Mary Kimonye said.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi mourned Raila, saying the news of his passing has struck a deep chord in our national soul.

Kenya, Muturi said, has lost one of its most consequential and iconic leaders, a man whose courage, conviction, and unwavering commitment to justice and democracy defined the course of our political history.

“For decades, Raila Odinga stood at the heart of Kenya’s struggle for freedom, reform, and inclusion. His journey, marked by sacrifice, resilience, and an unrelenting belief in the promise of this nation, inspired millions across generations. Few men have so profoundly shaped Kenya’s democratic space or borne its burdens with such resolve,” Muturi said.

The ex-AG, who is also the Democratic Party (DP) leader, said while he may have differed politically at various points, he has always respected his tenacity and deep love for country, adding his passing leaves a void not just in politics, but in the conscience of our nation.

“To Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and to all Kenyans who looked up to him, I extend my heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in knowing that his legacy will endure in our institutions, in our freedoms, and in the hearts of all who believe in the dream of a just and united Kenya.”
