The global burden of malaria in 2023 was heavily concentrated in Africa, with the five countries reporting the highest number of cases all located on the continent, collectively accounting for half of the world's malaria burden.

Uganda was the third-highest country with 12.57 million cases. Completing the top African hotspots were Ethiopia and Mozambique, which reported 9.56 million and 9.26 million cases, respectively.
Outside of Africa, India was a notable contributor, reporting 2.04 million cases.
The total picture, based on data from the Centre for Science and Environment, confirms that despite global efforts, malaria remains a devastating public health crisis, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In total, at least 80 countries reported malaria cases in 2023.
