The government has unveiled new regulations aimed at formalising the boda boda sector and improving road safety. Under the new rules, every rider will receive a unique registration number that identifies their county, sub-county, and stage of operation.
Riders must belong to a registered Sacco, wear a uniform specific to their location, and each stage is now required to appoint a chairman.
Chairmen will be held accountable if they cannot identify riders involved in incidents, ensuring greater responsibility within the sector.
To obtain registration, riders must hold a valid boda boda license, provide a certificate of good conduct, have insurance, and possess two helmets for safety purposes.
The reforms follow an agreement with the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya targeting riders whose conduct has been problematic.
Registration will begin after mapping all stages, creating a structured system that enhances accountability, improves public safety, and brings order to a sector long characterised by informal operations and safety challenges.
