The EACC 2024 report highlights key reasons why corruption continues to thrive in Kenya.
Topping the list is the high cost of living (17.9%), followed closely by widespread corruption in public offices (15.8%).
Poor public service delivery (11.8%), bad governance (11.2%), and increased reporting of corruption cases (11.1%) also contribute to the problem.
Kenyans say that demand for bribes, embezzlement, selfish public officers, and misappropriation of funds all exacerbate the situation.
Interestingly, high poverty levels (2.8%) were seen as the least cited reason, suggesting that structural and systemic issues are the major drivers.
These insights reflect citizens’ growing awareness and call for action. The findings challenge both national and county governments to improve governance, reduce economic pressure, and root out corruption from service points.
If left unchecked, corruption will continue to undermine development, justice, and public trust. Addressing these drivers is key to building a fairer and more accountable society.
