The refugee population in the East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region stands at 5.8 million as of May 31, 2025.
This figure includes 5.3 million refugees and 482,000 asylum seekers.
According to the Food Security & Nutrition Working Group report (June 2025), 92% of this population are refugees, while 8% are asylum seekers.
Most of them, 89%, reside in rural areas, with only 11% in urban areas.
The IGAD countries covered in the report are Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.
