    Kenya’s debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank has risen steadily over the years, according to Treasury data.

    As of December 2024, Kenya owed Sh1.53 trillion to the World Bank and Sh420.53 billion to the IMF.

    This brings the total to nearly Sh1.95 trillion, a sharp increase from Sh1.09 trillion (World Bank: Sh980.32bn, IMF: Sh110.99bn) in December 2020.

    The most significant jump occurred between 2022 and 2023, where World Bank debt grew from Sh1.29 trillion to Sh1.78 trillion and IMF debt from Sh359.67 billion to Sh421.54 billion.

    Kenya’s total external debt now stands at Sh5.06 trillion as of 2024.
