Kala-azar disease is a disease caused by a parasite.

According to WHO, it is fatal if left untreated in over 95% of cases.

It is characterized by irregular bouts of fever, weight loss, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and anaemia.

Health officials in Tiaty, Baringo County raised concerns over the rising cases of Kala-azar towards the end of January 2025.

The disease is endemic in Kenya's Rift Valley, eastern and northeastern regions.
