TROUBLE IS BREWING in one of the big
parties in the opposition over a disagreement
on whether to field a candidate in a key constituency in the upcoming by-elections.
Corridors understands that a faction of the party
leadership wants to have a candidate in the poll
to measure its popularity, while the other faction backs the position of the party supporting
an opposition candidate.
Already, one faction
had settled on a candidate, but the rival group
has declined to issue him with a ticket. They
argue the faction pushing to have a candidate
has been infiltrated by pro-government agents
to divide the vote.

TRADERS IN ONE of the towns in a constituency neighbouring Nairobi have expressed
frustrations over extortion by police officers
who often arrive in Subaru vehicles demanding
cash. In a recent incident, the alleged officers
arrived in four vehicles to reportedly extort
from a trader who refills gas cylinders.
What
they didn’t know is the trader had gotten fed
up with them and this time around refused to
entertain the behaviour. A commotion ensured,
drawing the attention of other traders who
ganged up against the officers. Not even shots
in the air cowed them.
Residents are now
demanding that the police bosses rein in such
rogue officers who have made their businesses, especially liquor shops and bars, their cash
cow.
