Budget for forest, water towers conservation slashed to Sh10.7bn

Ndung'u has proposed an allocation of Sh1.2 billion for human-wildlife conflict compensation.

The National Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung'u has proposed Sh36.6 billion to go towards access to clean and adequate water for domestic and agriculture use.

This is as per the proposal in the 2024-25 budget estimates read in Parliament on Thursday.

The allocation is down from last year's Sh43.3 billion in the 2023-24 budget.

In his budget proposals, Ndung'u proposed an allocation of Sh4.5 billion for water resource management. 

Ndung'u also allocated Sh1.9 billion for water storage up from the previous Sh1.6 billion.

The CS set aside Sh17.8 billion for irrigation and land reclamation and Sh1.9 billion for water harvesting and storage. 

The budget allocated for irrigation and land reclamation is a reduction from last year's Sh1.9 billion.

In order to support the environment and water conservation and response to climate change, Ndung'u proposed Sh10.7 billion for forests and water towers' conservation.

He proposed Sh1.6 billion for the Meteorological Service and Sh1.2 billion for human-wildlife conflict compensation.

Government’s bid to improve wildlife insurance received Sh800 million while Sh5.9 billion went towards the financing of local climate action projects.

In addition, he proposed Sh1.7 billion for forest research and development and Sh13.1 Billion for wildlife security conservation and management.

"In addition, I have proposed Sh1 billion for wildlife research and development, Sh1.5 billion for water resources management," he said.

The 2024/2025 budget is estimated to cost Sh3.91 trillion.

Of the amount, Sh1.58 trillion is meant for recurrent expenditure, Sh727.9 billion for development expenditure, Sh1.21 trillion for consolidated fund services and Sh400 billion for county equitable share.

To foot this budget, the government targets to collect Sh2.91 trillion from ordinary revenue and Sh441 billion from ministerial appropriation in aid.

The National Treasury has estimated a deficit of Sh508.9 billion of which it seeks to acquire Sh257.9 billion from borrowing from domestic lenders.

The remaining amount of Sh256.7 billion will be sourced from international lenders.
